Program Summary

Effective lawyering goes beyond legal knowledge that we learn in school and in the workplace. It requires deep understanding, active listening, and the ability to set aside assumptions. This seminar explores how attorneys can build stronger client relationships by shifting from assumption-driven thinking to an insight-based approach.

The ABA Model Rules of Professional Conduct emphasize competence (Rule 1.1) and communication (Rule 1.4). Misunderstanding a client’s needs or perspective can lead to ethical missteps, ineffective advocacy, and lost trust. This seminar will also provide practical strategies to ensure lawyers meet their ethical duties while enhancing their professional effectiveness.

Key topics to be discussed:

  • Beyond first impressions: Learn how cognitive biases can shape assumptions and how to cultivate a more objective and empathetic understanding of clients
  • Practical strategies for communication: Develop techniques to ask better questions, clarify client goals, and navigate difficult conversations
  • Ethical implications of misunderstanding clients: Understand how failure to properly assess a client’s needs can impact ethical obligations related to competence, diligence, and communication

This course is co-sponsored with myLawCLE.
